Many trans individuals say they, like their lesbian, gay and bisexual counterparts, have known from early adolescence. Others don’t become aware of the conflict between the sex they were assigned at birth and their gender identity until a much later age. Given the variance as to when individuals begin to feel the conflict, it makes it challenging to know the difference between playful experimentation and something much more fundamental.

As our awareness of gender identity grows, and our access to more widespread support grows, our worries also grow. We worry that allowing children to openly explore gender identity is creating a disproportionate number of non-binary or transgender children. We worry that if being trans is something that gives you attention at school, children could be drawn to changing their gender identity and possibly making decisions with irreversible lifelong consequences, which they later regret.

Children are different than grown-ups. I do have worries about trans kids because I remember how hard it was to be a kid. Children are much more likely to be influenced by group think. Things which seem cool, like self-harm for instance, can spread like wildfire.

As someone who struggled with my own burgeoning sexuality and puberty and wished desperately to escape from my problematic body to become more androgynous (or rather more immature) – it disturbs me. Children’s thoughts and opinions and beliefs can change so fluidly.
