“It’s dark out. Can we go now?” Aria paced the length of the great room, skirting the raised hearth against the south wall.

“Yeah, let me close out my computer.” Callie stretched at the table, smiling when Nate set a sandwich and cup of tea in front of her. “Thanks, hon. You take such good care of me.”

“Anything online yet?” Kenson asked coming down the stairs and checking his weapon. “My contacts haven’t got wind of what’s occurring in town. Still haven’t located McDowell. He’s got to know by now his ruse is up and the institution has been raided. We haven’t found any communications between him and Holland in Maryland.”

“Everyone’s got their hands full. It’ll take them all night to sort out the sheriff.” Dani sat on the couch with Marc, watching Loki keep pace with his companion.

Kenson stopped on the bottom step, tilting his head in consideration of his next words. “Aria, you don’t have to worry about returning your new BFF to the Sheriff’s department. They’ve been compensated for Loki. Not that I believe for a second he’d return. Probably track you across the country if need be.”

“Thanks.” Aria paused to kneel by the shepherd. “You, boy, like my new friends, are an unexpected treasure.”

Loki raised his paw in greeting, accepted with a smile.

“I never saw any memories of the sheriff at the institution. Not that I saw much while there.” Aria continued her pacing and pivoted for what seemed like the hundredth time. “If the sheriff didn’t shoot his deputy. Who did?”

Julien’s own anxiety ratcheted up with each of Aria’s turns. “Which means McDowell operated in plain sight, counting on the locals to not ask questions. You said the deputy was clean, Aria?”

“Yes. I saw memories of him with his wife and baby. They were happy. Totally involved. He didn’t have that type of killer instinct in him. I’d have seen it.”

“Might’ve been a kill of convenience. Something the institute could pin on you and use the sheriff to collaborate.” Conner signaled to Marc and Nate.

Kenson snagged his keys off the table. “Time to move out. We’ll have to sort the rest later. We’ll pay a visit to McDowell and see what he has to say about his Think Tank now. Surveillance shows he hasn’t left his home all day.”

“That might not be a good sign.” Aria sat on the hearth and grinned when Loki shoved his head under her hand and lifted. “Yeah, okay. You want me to pet you. Got the memo. Ready to take a ride?”

“I want to be back by midnight. It seems there’s a virtual storm brewing, and I need to return to Maryland by early AM.” Kenson took stock of each Crofton brother present, along with Dani, Callie, and Aria. “You each secure with your part?” Directed at the women in turn, he grinned. “Love watching you three in action. Better than any team I’ve worked alongside.”

“What will happen to the protection details when you retire?” Aria stood and accepted the jacket Julien handed her.
