Having taken stock of the overall situation, the big picture, we must now calculate li versus hai.

Li means “advantage,” what we have to gain by choosing one specific course of action over another. For example, if we give the mugger our wallet, will he be satisfied and run away? If we quietly finish our drink and leave the bar, will the insults (and then assault) follow us out into the parking lot?

Hai involves what we have to lose. If we pay regular extortion to the bully on the playground, we may gain temporary respite. But what do we lose in the long run? Respect for self? And what might you inadvertently gain? Childhood trauma and anger that you then carry with you into your adult dealings. Hai is the cost we are willing to pay for safety and winning. Sometimes, that cost is too high.
