We were in Dachau for maybe a week. They made us stay day and night sitting on the ground in the large square used for Appel. We had to relieve ourselves there. We did not work. In the barracks where we were supposed to sleep there were too many dead people, mountains of bodies really. They had not been able to burn them yet. We could not remove all of the bodies; it would have taken us a month. Prisoners of the camp must have had to do this work. They told us that as many as four or five thousands were burned every day. Probably being aware of losing the war, the Germans decided to take our group away to the Landsberg concentration camp.
The Landsberg concentration camp, or Lager, was one of the sub-camps in the tight network of the Dachau complex of concentration camps located in the districts of Landsberg and Schongau in Bavaria. In these various camps, prisoners were brought in from Russia, Poland, France and other occupied territories. They were used as slave labourers. Some of them worked for large firms nearby serving the German war industry. Two of them are the Bavarian Waterworks and the DAG (Dynamit Aktien Gesellschaft).
