. . . He has told us
that you always have pleasant memories of us,
and that you long to see us,
just as we, also, long to see you.
1 Thessalonians 3:6
It seemed out of place, but suddenly the phone rang. Working in the Desert Center weather station at night was always lonely, but this was a rainy Christmas Eve. I had returned from TDY at Mojave Wells. Loneliness had long since taken over my thoughts. It seemed that no one cared about me and that only Santa would have questions about the weather.
At first I wasn’t sure the phone was actually ringing for me, so I wasn’t going to answer it. Being single and a long way from home, I had also agreed to work a double shift. This allowed everyone else to spend this Christmas Eve with their families. Extra work was hardly a problem for a man as lonely as I was on that rainy, stormy winter evening.
The hours had seemed to drag on, but something unusual had already happened to me earlier this lonely evening. Along about sundown, I had been standing in quiet silence, looking out the weather station window into the rain, the cold winds, the drizzle, and the darkening fog as the dreariness of this stormy night time settled over the world in which I lived. Slowly, I had begun to feel as though my two guardian angels were standing near me, in sympathy with my loneliness. It felt as though one was standing next to the doorway behind me, and one was standing just behind me, out of sight on my left. It felt as though they wanted to know what I planned to do to celebrate Christmas as I worked these two night shifts. I thought about it for a minute or so, and I decided that for my Christmas celebration, along about 2:30 A.M., I would walk down to the other end of this deserted building. I planned to walk down to where the vending machines and the rest rooms were located. That section of the building was the Base Operations section. It was completely shut down, the doors were locked, and lights were turned off on this Christmas Eve. There, in the dark emptiness of this silent Sunday night, I planned to have my Christmas celebration alone, by buying from the vending machines, a cup of coffee and a candy bar. I had it all planned quite well. There, as I held the coffee and the candy bar in my hands, I planned to say a short prayer of thanks, and to ask God to be with me in the future as he had so mercifully been with me in the past. As soon as I had made this decision, it felt like my two guardian angels were happy. Then it felt as though the two of them left me alone, while they themselves had gone somewhere, out into the storm.
Then, earlier that evening, it felt as though one of my angels had returned for a few minutes.
