The first time he killed someone, he didn’t even realize it. They were pinned down behind a wall, scrambling for position and cover.

“Armstrong! Where is Diaz? “The young private was cramped at the end of their cover, but in the best spot to try and gauge the position of their brothers trapped equally on the other side. Clay couldn’t call in for air assistance unless he knew where they were.

“Let me check, sir!”

Clay popped a red smoke grenade in the air, alerting the air forces to their position. He just needed to know where the others were. “Armstrong! That position!”

The overeager private didn’t answer immediately, and that was a warning flag in Clay’s head. He couldn’t move as pinned down as he was and had to take his best guess as to where the others were, hoping they’d see his smoke and get the same idea. Air forces quickly came in, covering them as they were able to get up and move into a better position. Clay slid in the dirt next to Armstrong, who was lying on the ground.

“Armstrong, what’s—”

“Thank you for telling me,” she whispered, and his body relaxed against her.

“I just don’t want to have nightmares tonight.” His voice was tired as he stared dully at nothing. Ellie cupped his face, bringing his eyes to focus on her.

“Nightmares are just inside your head; they aren’t real.”

Clay exhaled, and Ellie rested her head against his chest. His heart beat steadily, but quickly against her ear. “That’s the problem; I can’t always tell what’s real and what isn’t.”

Ellie clenched his shirt in her fists, wanting to help him and not quite knowing how. “I’m real,” she managed, “I can promise that.”

She barely had the words out before his lips captured hers, his arms behind her back pushing her up and against him. He crushed her into him with a fearful desperation, and she let him take what he needed. A burst of arousal bloomed in his core, stretching itself lazily like a cat as he trailed down to her neck. His teeth nipped and grazed, dragging a moan from her as one hand moved to cup her ass, and the other to caress one breasts. His fingers
