CHAPTER SEVEN
Tulia enjoyed their time out on the boat, especially once the depressing conversation was over and they turned to lighter topics. Mary had brought some picnic supplies, and they had brunch out on the waves, enjoying the beautiful, clear day. Victor told them stories of some of the adventures heâd had on the boat, and he and Mary talked about their future travel plans.
They didnât return to the house until evening. Mary went into the kitchen to whip up some snacks and returned with a bowl of caramel covered popcornâfreshly made on the stoveâa platter of sliced cheese and meats, and mugs of hot chocolate for all four of them. They sat around the coffee table playing board games while they chatted.
âAre the two of you having a nice visit so far?â Mary asked.
âItâs been lovely,â Tulia said, looking up from where she was perusing the rules of the game.
Samuel nodded. âThank you for hosting us. Itâs nice to visit, and Iâm glad the two of you have been able to get to know Tulia.â
âItâs our pleasure,â Mary said. âIâm glad we can provide some of the comforts of home after youâve been on the road for so long. Though, your RV is lovely, Tulia. It must be a real home away from home for you.â
âIt is,â Tulia admitted. âThe lease ran out on my apartment, and I didnât renew it, so in a way, I guess the RV is my home for now. Iâll be staying with my parents when I get back to Michigan, but itâs not going to be the same as having my own place.â
âIâm sure theyâll be happy to have you,â Mary said. âDo you think youâll end up settling down in Michigan?â
Tulia didnât miss the way the womanâs eyes slid to her son briefly. She was probably worried about Samuel getting involved with someone who lived out of state.
âI donât think so. Donât get me wrong, I love my home state, and Michigan has a lot of gorgeous areas, but I want something different. Iâm still thinking of my options, but Iâm open to moving out of state. I already told my parents Iâd stay with them through Christmas, but after that, Iâm going to start looking for a more permanent place to stay.â
âWell, I might be biased, but I think New England is a lovely place to live. It can get chilly in the winter, but late spring, summer, and early fall are absolutely gorgeous, and thereâs no lack of things to do if you like outdoor activities.â
âYouâre being a little obvious, dear,â Victor said with a chuckle, patting his wifeâs hand. âIâm sure she has already considered moving closer to Samuel. Let the two of them figure it out on their own.â
âIâm sorry,â Mary said, giving her a small smile. âIâm ahead of myself. Itâs just that I know how hard long-distance relationships can be. Victor and I made it work, but it got so much easier once I moved up here to Maine with him.
