CHAPTER SEVEN

Tulia enjoyed their time out on the boat, especially once the depressing conversation was over and they turned to lighter topics. Mary had brought some picnic supplies, and they had brunch out on the waves, enjoying the beautiful, clear day. Victor told them stories of some of the adventures he’d had on the boat, and he and Mary talked about their future travel plans.

They didn’t return to the house until evening. Mary went into the kitchen to whip up some snacks and returned with a bowl of caramel covered popcorn—freshly made on the stove—a platter of sliced cheese and meats, and mugs of hot chocolate for all four of them. They sat around the coffee table playing board games while they chatted.

“Are the two of you having a nice visit so far?” Mary asked.

“It’s been lovely,” Tulia said, looking up from where she was perusing the rules of the game.

Samuel nodded. “Thank you for hosting us. It’s nice to visit, and I’m glad the two of you have been able to get to know Tulia.”

“It’s our pleasure,” Mary said. “I’m glad we can provide some of the comforts of home after you’ve been on the road for so long. Though, your RV is lovely, Tulia. It must be a real home away from home for you.”

“It is,” Tulia admitted. “The lease ran out on my apartment, and I didn’t renew it, so in a way, I guess the RV is my home for now. I’ll be staying with my parents when I get back to Michigan, but it’s not going to be the same as having my own place.”

“I’m sure they’ll be happy to have you,” Mary said. “Do you think you’ll end up settling down in Michigan?”

Tulia didn’t miss the way the woman’s eyes slid to her son briefly. She was probably worried about Samuel getting involved with someone who lived out of state.

“I don’t think so. Don’t get me wrong, I love my home state, and Michigan has a lot of gorgeous areas, but I want something different. I’m still thinking of my options, but I’m open to moving out of state. I already told my parents I’d stay with them through Christmas, but after that, I’m going to start looking for a more permanent place to stay.”

“Well, I might be biased, but I think New England is a lovely place to live. It can get chilly in the winter, but late spring, summer, and early fall are absolutely gorgeous, and there’s no lack of things to do if you like outdoor activities.”

“You’re being a little obvious, dear,” Victor said with a chuckle, patting his wife’s hand. “I’m sure she has already considered moving closer to Samuel. Let the two of them figure it out on their own.”

“I’m sorry,” Mary said, giving her a small smile. “I’m ahead of myself. It’s just that I know how hard long-distance relationships can be. Victor and I made it work, but it got so much easier once I moved up here to Maine with him.
