Chapter Fourteen
Levi sat at the long mahogany bar with two of his buddies, nursing a beer and his irritation with Raine. Sheâd cancelled on what was supposed to be their first real dateâdinner out and a movieâwhen sheâd received a call about hosting an event. A fiftieth wedding anniversary party to take place at the end of the month. The woman had insisted on meeting with Raine this evening after firing her previous planner for unspecified reasons, and Raine hadnât wanted to say no to a potential client. Even if the woman sounded like a nightmare customer, she was thrilled to get her new business up and running.
âWhatâs bugging you? No offense, but youâre about as fun as an STD tonight.â
Leviâs lips curved in a reluctant smile as he glanced over at Flash. âSorry. I guess Iâm a little preoccupied.â
âI would have thought youâd be happier than a pig in mud since youâre currently getting some on a regular basis.â Patton signaled the bartender for another round. âOr did your new woman already dump you?â
Flash turned to survey the packed tavern, a favorite hangout for both locals and visitors to the area. âI was more than a little surprised you agreed to meet us tonight, Levi. For the last couple of weeks, youâve shut us down every time weâve asked.â
âRaineâs a hell of a lot prettier than you two, and no, she didnât dump me.â He hunched one shoulder. âBut she was busy tonight, soââ
âYou made time for us?â Pattonâs tone held a hint of amusement. âHey, no judgement. If I were in your shoes, Iâd drop both of you in a hot minute. But since Iâm not . . .â He nodded toward a table across the room where two unfamiliar women, probably tourists, occasionally glanced in their direction. âI may try my luck with one of those ladies.â
âIâll go with you.â Drink in hand, Flash slid off his stool. âWish us luck.â
âSure. Have fun.â
Levi barely noticed his friends leave as he read the text from Raine. Her meeting had finished early and had gone well. His earlier annoyance evaporated as he typed rapidly.
Great! Meet me at Bar of America.
A moment later his phone dinged with a new message. ???
Hanging out with a couple of friends. He glanced over at Flash and Patton, who were chatting up the two women, and sent a second text. Want to meet them?
Okay. Be there in ten.
He responded with a thumbs up emoji and stuck his phone in his back pocket, his mood infinitely improved as he sipped his beer.
âItâs been a while, Levi. How are you?â
At the familiar voice, he spun on his stool to face Mona. His ex-girlfriend wore a pair of shorts that showed off long, tanned legs, and a top that revealed quite a bit of cleavage. Her curly, brown hair was pulled into a high ponytail, and her full, red-tinted lips were set in a bit of a pout.
After a moment, he answered her question. âIâm good. You look terrific.
