“This is just dinner?” I asked.

“Yes. Casual. A chance for everyone to catch up. There are alphas from every pack on the west coast here, and tomorrow we’ll have meetings to discuss various disagreements and differences.”

“That all sounds very civil.”

“It isn’t always. But we try.”

We reached the foyer and I stopped, looking up at him. “No one is going to turn into an animal, right?”

“At dinner? Unlikely.”

“Okay, good.”

“I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

I believed him, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t hurt me. I was trying to steal from him, and he wouldn’t care that I was doing it to save my friend’s life. To save my own life. I’d already lied to him, and I knew what he did to liars.

As we entered the huge room, I leaned toward Garreth and whispered, “Is the City Pack the mob?”

“Not in the human sense, but they are dangerous.”

“You’re telling me.”

His gaze sharpened. “What do you mean?”

Too late, I realized that there was a wry knowledge to my voice that suggested I knew the City Pack better than he’d expected.

“They’re mountain lions.” I tried to play it off, hoping he bought it.

“Hmm.” He nodded, and it was impossible to say if it worked. “I’m going to go talk with some of the other alphas. Are you comfortable mingling and trying to see if they approach you?”

I nodded. “You really think they’re not being honest with you, don’t you?”

He shrugged. “I have good reason to.”

I tried not to look guilty. “I can do it.”

“Thank you. And I’ve got your back. If you feel uncomfortable, let me know.”

I’ve got your back.

It was what Seth had said to him, and now he’d said it to me twice.

I liked it. A lot.

I shouldn’t, but I did.

“Thanks. Now go. I’ll be fine.”

He strode off to join a group of men and women at the far wall. The wall itself was made entirely of glass and enormous wooden posts. Darkness had fallen, so it reflected the room, which was one of the most beautiful I’d ever seen. The wooden ceiling soared high above, supported by massive rafters that had once been huge logs. Large, rustic chandeliers hung from the beams, glittering brightly on the crowd below. Two huge fireplaces sat on opposite walls, and tables full of food and drink surrounded the people.

I made a beeline for the food as I subtly inspected the guests.

They were all magical, every single one of them able to turn into an animal.

Except me.

I shivered, pushing the thought from my mind, and focused on the spread, an amazing assortment of cheeses, meats, breads, and fruit. A plate of tiny canapés tempted me, so ornate that it seemed a shame to ruin them by shoving them in my mouth like a heathen.

I ate one, anyway, trying to be polite about it.

“I’ve never seen anyone look at food like it was their lover before, but you’re managing it.”

I turned toward the feminine voice, swallowing the caviar as I spotted her.

She was pretty, with blond hair and sparkling brown eyes.
