“Diarmuid will be here at three,” Evie announced as she breezed through the mudroom and into the kitchen.

Keir looked over at her. “Your mother’s been catching me up.”

“Oh?” Evie sounded guarded.

The two of them were bickering the day she took off to get some air and see the mill house. I’d wondered if Keir blamed himself for her capture, but didn’t want to ask. If he did, it was a private matter and not worth dissecting.

“I’d like to be present for tea if you have no objection,” he said. “I need to extend congratulations to the groom-to-be.”

She visibly relaxed. “Sure. You’re part of the family. Right?”

I wasn’t sure whether she meant part of Diarmuid’s family or my family. It could’ve gone either way, but Keir revealed his interpretation by saying, “I hope to be.”
