At the south end of the island at Ngrerewal Picnic Area there is a good spot to halt for lunch (prepared ahead of time.) There are tables and shade trees, but the beach, which is poor, consists of sharp limestone, and has a heavy surf. For good beaches, go north to Honeymoon Beach. It has a long reach of sandy beach backed by palms.
But for the most refreshing swim on Peleliu, ask Elbelau to take you to the Ngermelt Swimming Hole. This is an eerie natural hole filled with a mixture of crystal clear water that is half-salt, half-fresh. The thing to do is leap into the pool, about 12 feet down, paddle about and climb out on a metal ladder.
