Seeding Density

Seeding density is the weight of seeds you need to put on a certain growing area in order to have the highest yield or return on investment.

Sadly, there is no perfect seed density number that works for everybody, but there are general guidelines. You should use these guidelines to start out with and adjust your seeding density according to your own experience.

You will want to pay attention to which densities you use and the results that they yield. You should write all this information down in a notebook so that you are able to look back on it and compare results. Keep into account that different suppliers have different guidelines and seeding density rates.

The first time you plant microgreens, you will mostly be focusing on learning the steps and keeping the plants alive and healthy. Once you have done it a few times, these things will become easy and you will be able to focus more on the minor details of your growing technique.

Density by Volume. You can measure by volume, which would basically just be looking at the number of seeds you use. For example, 5 tablespoons per tray. This method is not exact and not used by professional growers.

Density by Weight. You can also measure by weight, which is the most accurate way to measure your seeding rates. This is the method that’s most used. If you are researching seeding density you are likely to be presented with the weight per flat (10x20 inches).

This weight is the weight of the seed before being soaked.

People have different seeding rates for their microgreens. I have investigated many seed suppliers’ lists of recommended seed density and they are all different. So, it would be impossible to give you a rule to live by. Instead, I’m going to give you a reference for small, medium and big seeds.

Small seeds: 1/8th of an ounce (3 grams) per 10x20 tray

Medium seeds: 1/2 an ounce (10-15 grams) per 10x20 tray

Big seeds: 1 ounce (25 grams) + per 10x20 tray

Using this in combination with your seed’s supplier guidelines, you will be able to make an educated first guess at seeding densities. Don’t forget to write down the information for later reference so you can adjust your seeding rates.
