No.10, Lane l00, Changshu Lu. (021) 62491666. www.shanghaiopera.com.cn.

Founded in the mid-1950s, the Shanghai Opera House is a performing arts company dedicated to Western and Chinese (both traditional and contemporary) operas. It stages its productions at various venues in the city such as the Shanghai Grand Theatre and the Shanghai Concert Hall.

Shanghai Oriental Art Centre

425 Dingxiang Lu, Pudong. (021) 38424800. www.shoac.com.cn.

This mammoth state-of-the-art structure was designed by the French architect Paul Andreu to recall the five petals of an orchid. Opened in 2005, the center is the crown jewel of the Pudong's cultural venues. It contains three performance spaces, of which the 1,953-seat concert hall holds China's largest pipe organ.

Conservatory of Music

20 Fenyang Lu via Huaihai Zhong Lu, Former French Concession. (021) 64370137. www.shcmusic.edu.cn.

The public is welcome to attend concerts by students—and sometimes visiting artists—usually held on weekend evenings in this 780-seat campus venue.

Shanghai Concert Hall

523 Yan'an Lu. (021) 63384401. www.culture.sh.cn.

This major venue near the People's Square is one of Shanghai’s most historic concert halls. It was built in 1931 in the central part of the city. To reduce increased traffic noise, it was moved 216 feet in late 2002, and later expanded to a capacity of 1,200 seats. The hall has hosted some of the world's top performers and orchestras. Many Shanghai orchestras and local musical groups hold their concerts here.

Chinese Music and Opera

Shanghai National Orchestra

336 Xinhua Lu. (021) 34642122 or 62835288. www.sh-co.com.cn.

Formed in 1952, this is one of the oldest orchestras in the country. Performing at various city venues, some 80 musicians play traditional Chinese instruments such as flutes, drums, gongs and plucked and bowed stringed instruments. Concerts are often a medley of popular opera, and musical and folk tunes.
