The Couch
“The Couch” takes place shortly after the end of The Angel.
Michael blamed the couch.
He couldn’t figure out anyone or anything else to blame. He paced around the living room currently devoid of any furniture but for the couch and an ebony coffee table.
Having no experience in these matters, Michael decided to call the most experienced person he knew. He pulled out his cell phone and dialed up Nora. On the third ring she answered in a slightly breathless, giddy voice. Glad someone was having a good evening. His sucked and was getting worse by the second.
“Did I interrupt something?” Michael asked.
“Nah, just reading the dirty parts of Atlas Shrugged again. What’s up, Angel?”
“Griffin and I got in a fight,” Michael confessed immediately, sitting on the floor and pulling his legs to his chest.
“Aww...” she said, almost laughing. “Your first fight. This is one for the scrapbook. Please tell me it’s about something totally stupid.”
“It’s about the new couch,” Michael said in utter misery.
“Perfect.”
“It’s not funny, Nora. Griffin walked out. I keep trying to call him, and he won’t answer.”
The panic in his voice must have gotten to her.
“Tell me what happened.”
“Okay, so I had this big Econ test to study for. But Griffin wants to go furniture shopping. So we went yesterday and spent like eight hundred hours picking out one couch.”
“Sounds like Griffin. When he and I went shopping for his Porsche, he test-drove every car on the lot. Even identical models. He said he had to know how the different paint jobs felt.”
“Right. He’s nutty about this stuff,” Michael said, glad to know Nora understood. “So Friday was furniture shopping so today was supposed to be me studying for my test. But he wouldn’t let me. First he wanted to have sex, which I didn’t complain about. Then he took me to lunch. Then we went to Shakespeare in the Park—”
“That’s fucking enchanting right there,” Nora said.
Michael ignored her. “Then he made me do even more furniture shopping. Finally, I said I couldn’t hang out with him anymore today, or I’d flunk my test. He said he didn’t understand why I was stressing so much. And I said…”
Michael paused and closed his eyes tight. Now he remembered. Wasn’t the couch’s fault at all.
“What did you say, Angel?” Nora asked gently.
“I said that unlike him, I cared about graduating from college.”
He heard Nora’s sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. “Ouch,” she said.
“I know.” Michael rubbed at his face. He still couldn’t believe he’d said that. Griffin was wicked smart. It wasn’t the absence of intelligence that kept Griffin from graduating from Brown but the presence of a drug problem, which he’d faced and conquered.
“I only meant that he’s, you know, rich, but I’m going to need to get a job someday. He’s going to dump me, and I totally deserve it.”
“Relax. Griffin’s so in love with you he can’t see straight. He’s probably out there walking, trying to clear his head. That’s all.”
“What
