Michael knocked at the small house’s door, his gaze roaming the tiny front porch, and spun around at Gerritt’s appearance in the doorway.

“Maire’s asleep,” he said, leaning on the trim.

Michael nodded and glanced to the left. “It’s you I want to talk to. Can you spare me a moment?”

Gerritt stood in place, silent for a few seconds, then exited, pulling the door shut. He waved Michael to a seat on the stoop. “This about Jenny?” he asked.

Michael twisted his head around to see his face. “Yes. What told you that?”

“You did. You’ve only sought my advice on a handful of occasions, on only one of those did it not involve Jenny.”

Michael faced forward. That was probably true. More and more, he was realizing how much he’d driven her crazy, following her around, picking on her to no end. Childish things. When what he wanted was something real and lasting, something like ... like his parents had. This knowledge thumped into place, and he all but flinched at it.

He wanted to grow up, wanted them to let him go, but he wanted the love he’d seen in their eyes. And he wanted that from Jenny, who, up until now, hadn’t given him any hope of it.

“Well?” Gerritt asked.

Michael drew in a breath. “She asked me to drop out of the auction because she wanted me to only look at her.”

“She said that?”

Michael nodded. “Made me promise, so I told her I would. She’s spoken with Nate already. She told him I wouldn’t be in it and why. She told me later, he knew that already.”

“He knew why?”

Again, Michael nodded. “I’m supposed to leave in ten days, and I’m worried about her.” He glanced at Gerritt again. “You know her idea about the library?”

“Yeah,” Gerritt bobbed his head.

“She went to present it today, but some guy named Roger Hewitt was already there. He apparently had the exact same idea, almost word for word. He’d already had it approved.”

“Roger Hewitt, you said?”

Michael stared at his friend. He knew that look. It was the one Gerritt got when he was trying not to be angry. Jaw tight, teeth clamped, he breathed in and out, shallow, his hands gripping his knees.

“Papa was mad, too,” Michael continued. “Who is this guy that he makes everyone so upset?”

Gerritt exhaled, loud, one hand scrubbing across his head. “I crossed paths with him trying to publish the book about your dad. In the end, I decided to use Walter’s help instead, and I’m glad I did because Roger is shady. It’s like he has his finger in every pie without being invited to the meal.”

“I got that impression. Dad called him a liar and a thief. What I don’t understand is how he knew all that? I wasn’t there. I met up with them at my grandmother’s place. But for him to know her proposal in so much detail ...”

“I was going to introduce them ... Maire’s idea,” Gerritt replied. “I thought better of it later and told her so.
