CHAPTER 8 Aaron and I Meet Again!

Tamiko and I hung out and stayed up late at night, talking and sharing our favorite fashion bloggers on our phones. On Saturday, we both woke up to the sound of people getting ready—a running shower, a whistling teakettle, and lots of talking.

I knew Dad and Tamiko’s parents were leaving early to go to the college—there were a bunch of events during the day, before the reunion at night. Kai had a bunch of stuff planned for me and Tamiko, and I was feeling kind of excited to see what the day would bring.

I rummaged through my bag, looking for something to wear. For the first time in weeks, I was kind of regretting my all-black wardrobe. I remembered a blue sundress I had back in my closet at home, and sighed. It would have been perfect for a day like today. But the black shorts and black scoop-neck T-shirt I put on were cute, and I added a silver necklace with a dangling black rose.

Downstairs, the adults and Kai were busy digging into a bag of steaming hot bagels.

“Good morning, girls,” Mrs. Sato said. “I know these aren’t as good as New York bagels, but they’re not bad.”

“They smell great,” I said, taking a seat and pouring myself a glass of orange juice.

“We’re going to be leaving in a few minutes,” Dad announced. “Are you sure you’ll be okay today?”

“Don’t worry, Mr. Cruz,” Kai said. “I’ve texted everyone with today’s schedule, so you’ll know where we’ll be.”

Tamiko reached for her phone and checked it out. “We’re going to the movies at eleven this morning?” she asked.

“The first matinee of the day is always the cheapest,” Kai said. “We’re meeting Layla there at ten thirty, so we can get good seats.”

“Who’s Layla?” I asked.

“It’s Kai’s gorgeous girlfriend,” Tamiko explained, and Kai blushed a little. “Seriously, she could be a model. She’s really, really stunning.”

“That’s not why I like her,” Kai said. “She has an even more beautiful personality.”

“That’s how I feel about my friend Emma,” I said. “She’s a professional model, but she’s also one of the sweetest, nicest people I know.”

“You’re friends with an actual model?” Tamiko asked. “Of course you are. I bet everyone from New York City knows a model or an actor.”

“Well, I only live in the city part-time now,” I explained. “I live in New Jersey most of the time. That’s where the Cupcake Club is, and Emma’s part of the club. It’s Katie, Emma, and Alexis.”

“Oh, right. A chef, a model, and a female Kai,” Tamiko replied. “Maybe I can meet them one day.”

She craned her neck toward her mom. “Can we go visit Mia in the fall?”

Mrs. Sato smiled at my dad, and I could tell they were happy we were getting along so well.

“We can talk about it,” she said. “I haven’t been to the city in ages.”

“That might be fun,” Mr. Sato agreed.

“Whoot!” Tamiko cheered.

Then her mom changed the subject. “Kai, maybe you can take the girls to the mall for me this afternoon.
