Chapter Twenty-One

Austin was having a hard time not moping around after they let their person of interest run free at the Gaunts' house. He needed to show Maria that disappointment was a common part of the job and that it did no good to ruminate on lost leads, but he had quite literally let this man slip out of his grasp. The only thing Austin had learned from that experience was that their suspect knew what direction the police were heading with their investigation and that Austin was in horrific physical shape. Other than that, he couldn’t do much more than confirm that the man they believed to be Jeremy was short and chubby and liked to dress in dark colors.

Even though the police seemed dead set on Corey as their main suspect, Austin still had his hunch that Corey was innocent. He knew that Corey was no upstanding citizen, but that didn’t take away from the fact that Corey had no motive. He admitted that things had ended well with Janey, and the Gaunt parents hadn’t raised any concerns in their short phone call with the agency. Plus, Corey didn’t seem like the type of person to go to great lengths to set up a torture room just because he was bored. Even Catherine, who was never a fan of the guy, thought he was too lazy to hurt a fly.

“Do we have an upload time for that most recent red room video?” Austin called across the hallway to Maria.

“Yeah, let me check,” she called back. “It was uploaded at 1:23.”

“And what time did we arrive at the Gaunts’ house?”

“Uh, it would have to be sometime around two. I texted my boyfriend before we got in the car, and that message was sent at ten ’til.”

Maria walked into Austin’s office, laptop in hand. “We should have just built one big office for the two of us,” she said, sitting on the floor beside Austin’s desk. She leaned up against the wall and set her computer on her lap. “Are you trying to establish a timeline for our little car thief?”

“Yeah. I think it’s pretty clear that Jeremy knows about Corey. Why, though?”

Maria tilted her head from side to side while she thought. “Maybe he’s framing Corey. It sounds like the girls never had an enemy in their life, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Catherine Abrams wasn’t the only person who couldn’t stand Corey. What if he really pissed someone off and Jeremy is taking revenge on him?”

“I don’t think it’s revenge on Corey, though,” Austin said. “Unless this guy hates Janey and Corey, that doesn’t really add up. Jeremy has some type of personal issue with Janey or he wouldn’t single her out so often and berate her for her impurity or whatever.”

“Then how do we explain the last video where Nora was front and center?” she asked. “Nora wasn’t naked like the other videos. She was draped in a trash bag.”

“I know,” Austin said, rubbing his forehead. “Her body was covered in an unflattering way.
