The next morning, Maria sat in Austin’s office and grilled him for the details of how their night had gone.

“She didn’t tell you anything about it?” Austin asked innocently.

“No! I didn’t see her come in last night and I was gone before she got up this morning,” Maria said, her anticipation obviously growing with each passing second. “Did you mess it up? Did she some home in tears? Am I going to have to find a new roommate?” Maria whisper-shouted the last part because Terry was in the main office area ‘reading a book’ (which probably meant playing that video game on his phone again) and she didn’t want him to hear her.

“Do you really have that little faith in me?” Austin asked defensively. “You are, after all, the one to blame if it didn’t work out.”

“What?” Maria jumped to her feet.

“I just meant that you were the one who suggested we go together.” Austin tried to say the phrase as nonchalantly as possible because he could tell how much it irked her.

“Oh, for the love of God, just tell me how it went.” Maria finally relented and sat in one of the comfortable office chairs that sat on the other side of Austin’s desk.

“It was perfect. I’ll say nothing more than that.”

“And the alcohol?”

“Avoided entirely,” Austin reported, and a look of relief came across Maria’s face. “Why didn’t you mention that Delfia wasn’t a drinker before we went out?”

“I didn’t want to spoon feed you. I figured you’d have to struggle through things on your own this way, and that’s better for you than having advance warning.” She put her hands behind her head and kicked her feet up onto the table. “Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and—” Austin’s phone on his desk began ringing, and he looked at the caller ID.

“Quince?” he said aloud, confused.

“That’s not how that saying ends,” Maria joked. Austin gave her an unimpressed look as he picked up the phone.

“Hello, Steven,” Austin answered.

“Hiya, Mr. Drake,” said Quince. “Are you in the middle of something? Did I interrupt you?” Steven Quince was one of the youngest guys on the force here in Miami and an acquaintance of Maria and Austin’s. They had helped him on a past case, when he accidentally got his fingerprints on the murder weapon when he was bagging it up and thus became a suspect. Austin was able to find the real murderer quite quickly and get him off the charges, and Quince was very grateful to him. It’d been six months since that incident, and Quince still called Austin up every so often when he had something he thought might be helpful to him. No matter how many times they told him that he had repaid them enough, he kept doing favors for them. Eventually, it got to the point where the partners stopped protesting and accepted the kindness.

“No, kid, go ahead. I’ll put you on speaker so Maria can hear you too.
