In most towns and cities you will find a profusion of private schools and colleges catering to working adults who return to education in their twenties and thirties. These colleges offer night school classes in English, law, accountancy, hairdressing, and dentistry.

For middle- and upper-class Mexicans, attending a good school, getting a place at a good university, and doing a Masters or MBA abroad are seen as the keys to a good career.

The School System

Compulsory free education in the public school system currently starts in primaria (primary school) for children from six to twelve, although there are plans to extend it to pre-school for three- and four-year-olds.

Secundaria (Secondary School or Junior High) is from thirteen to fifteen, and is also obligatory. Prepa (short for preparatoria) is the equivalent of High School, and prepares students for entry into a university or technical college. This level is not compulsory; the reality is that most young people leave at the end of secondary school, and some before that.

Both public and private schools have to follow the curriculum laid down by the SEP (Secretaría de Educación Pública, the Public Education Ministry) and the 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. school day, but private schools generally offer extra subjects and will often have a longer school day, or after-school classes extending into the afternoon.
