This is the eleventh year in a row that Dr Ruth Stone has taught the same course. This year there are twenty-five students in the class, and the average examination result is 64 per cent, with a standard deviation of 9 per cent. The average result for the previous ten years is 61 per cent. Ruth asks herself whether this year’s batch of students is better than their predecessors and decides to answer the question by using a statistical test.
