The drive to the beach house was always enjoyable for Vera. Once she was past the traffic in and around Tacoma, the roads became less crowded and the view of the Puget Sound became more prevalent. The closer she came to the ocean, the more its peacefulness began to calm her frazzled nerves. As she pulled up to the house, she could feel a sense of serenity wash over her.

Kelli seemed to enjoy the ride as well. Even though she was safely ensconced on a memory foam dog bed in the back of the SUV, she seemed to know where they were going. Vera helped her out of the back and into the house. Whatever pain Kelli had been feeling was eased by the medication and the sheer joy of being at the beach.

Vera lit a fire in the river rock fireplace in the family room and brought the dog bed in for Kelli. The rhythmic sounds of the waves on the shoreline played their music which resonated inside her. It felt good to breathe the salt air and to feel a sense of peace finally returning to her world. As night fell, Vera didn’t want Kelli to have to climb the stairs to the master bedroom, so she decided to make a bed for herself on the couch. She opened the linen closet at the end of the hall and saw the blankets she wanted on the top shelf. She jumped up and grabbed at the bottom blanket, when she did, a large manila envelope protruded from the bottom of the pile. Suddenly, her attention shifted from blankets to what was inside the envelope. She reached up and pulled it down. It was thick in the middle with Jeff’s handwriting on the front; written neatly on a label that read: ‘New York Photos.’ She had never seen this envelope before and couldn’t imagine why Jeff would have hidden it under a stack of blankets. As she started to back away from the closet, the bedding tumbled out onto the floor nearly hitting her as it fell. She paid it no heed, being far more intrigued by what was in the envelope. She sat down at the kitchen table and poured the contents out. There were mostly pictures that looked like some kind of demolition. On the backsides were words written in Spanish. She examined each photo and determined that they were pictures of the 9/11 devastation. There were nearly a hundred photographs in crystal clear detail showing angles and places never shown by the media. She looked at the papers that accompanied the photographs and couldn’t quite make out what they meant. There were chemical formulas that referred back to the numbers on the photographs. She set them aside and tried to figure out exactly what it was she was looking at and why Jeff would have had them hidden.

What was Jeff into? She wondered. She knew he didn’t speak fluent Spanish, but she did remember that shortly before his accident, he had gone to Argentina for a few weeks.
