Chapter 10: The Fall Ball

The conclusion of October signaled the beginning of the end of the fall semester at the Academy. The students had four more weeks of school left until they would be dismissed for the holidays. It was starting to be a stressful time as midterms loomed around the corner, every student preparing themselves for the study rush that occurred every year in the library around this time. The weather outside had seen a significant drop as the tropical paradise now took on the winter chill. Students no longer hung out along the beach and were instead seen bundled up beside the common room fireplace.

While he was still worried about his grades, Tristan was nowhere near as stressed as he had been this time last year. Back then, concerned that his failing grades would be the reason their team collapsed into the bottom rankings, Tristan barely had time to enjoy himself at all. This time around, things were different. Tristan was maintaining a solid B average across the board, excelling in his abilities class and Literature, while Biology and Trig kept his ego in check. Likewise, the group as a whole was doing really well academically, holding their own among the top three teams. Belle and Dan both had 4.0s this semester, and even Gabriel was pulling a slightly higher GPA than Tristan.

It was a testament to his work ethic and the school’s excellent tutoring program that Gabriel thrived in the classroom as he did. It was one thing to see Gabriel go through the year from a distance, but being on his team opened Tristan to a whole new side of his once-rival. Although they still loved to compete, challenging each other to billiard competitions or one-on-one soccer games, their banter was no longer rooted in ridicule but rather friendly teasing. They loved to rib each other whenever the opportunity arose, and Tristan found Gabriel to have an amazing sense of comedic timing. Whenever they weren’t joking around or playing sports, the two could be found studying film well after their other two teammates had fallen asleep beside them on the common room couch.

By themselves, the two would share stories of their times growing up and their experiences from last year. Although it was difficult for him to discuss, Gabriel had even started to open up to Tristan about his anxieties and issues with his powers, his fears about never being the same. It was an aspect of the young man Tristan had never seen from the other side, and now that he had, Tristan wondered why it had taken them so long to get here. If Tristan didn’t know any better, he could’ve sworn they were becoming close friends. In fact, the days of him brooding over the loss of Christian had slowly faded, the wound finally starting to heal.

The only blip to the semester seemed to be that the rest of the team wasn’t as cohesive as they used to be. While still friends, there was also an air of distrust among them ever since Dan’s outburst.
