Figure 7-25: (a) SEM micrograph showing the SiC particles inside a secondary phase. (b) EDS spectra of a particle showing major Al and Mn peaks and minor Si and C peaks [Eas05].

The results of this study confirm that the addition of SiC particles to Mg-Al alloys provides grain refinement. However the microstructural analysis provides what may be an alternative interpretation for the results. It showed that the SiC particles tend to be coated by an Al-Mn phase.

Calculations of the solidification sequence from Thermo-Calc, assuming Gulliver-Scheil solidification behaviour, are shown in Figure 7-26 and Table 7-5. They show that the first phase to precipitate during solidification is the Al 8Mn 5 phase, indicating that the Al-Mn phase is probably Al 8Mn 5. Since the experimental observations indicate that the SiC particles may be coated with the Al 8Mn 5 phase, it appears that the precipitation of this phase is likely to affect the grain refinement mechanism critically.
