CHAPTER ELEVEN

>>>—MERCY—<<<

Three hands of time had passed, and still he had not returned. The smooth rolling hills that spread below her hid any sign of movement between her and the far city, a city bustling with activity. Mercy both dreaded the chaotic place and eagerly awaited the experience. Curiosity consumed her as she wondered about the diverse array of people she would encounter.

She paced the cliff, careful to stay within the safety of the tall, fragrant eucalyptus trees. Plucking a leaf, she broke it to release the heady aroma. On their return trip, she would be sure to fill her bag full of the leaves for Laurie.

As her legs grew weary and with the uneasy gazes of the men in camp scrutinizing her every move, she sank down onto a mossy boulder next to a single white lily.

The simple, pure beauty of the flower captivated her, drawing her in, calming her nerves, and relaxing her tense body. It bent slightly in the light breeze, a breeze full of salty air.

She inhaled the scent, instantly refreshed as she remembered the peace of the ocean’s rhythmic waves. There was no telling what this excursion would bring, but she hoped there would be another chance to rest in the serenity of the Great Waters.

A change in the type of noise she heard from the city drew her attention back to the gates. There, a large group of what she could only describe as a military force marched their way out, seeming to head directly towards her.

Her entire body tensed, making it difficult to call out using her bird whistle. Eventually the high pitch call left her and carried down to the men in the small ravine. Mojo was by her side in a moment, crouching low and watching the group approach. He whistled low. “That’s a sizable force.”

Gibson edged toward them as well. “Definitely military, but no uniforms…do you think that odd?” He glanced at Mercy.

She shrugged. “I would think uniforms require infrastructure and funds,” she said, narrowing her eyes as she took in his uniform.

“And planning,” he said, ignoring her look. “Wait,” he pulled out the binoculars. “Some of them have uniforms.” He handed the spy glasses to Mercy.

Indeed, several of the soldiers wore khaki uniforms, and they seemed strategically placed at the front, rear, and sides of the ragtag group. The men marching in the center scowled with expressions ranging from boredom to fury. She handed the binoculars back to Gibson.

“Do you notice similarities between the men in uniform, who look like officers, and the rest of the soldiers? Anything that could tell us who might be in charge?” Mercy asked of the young soldier.

“You mean, as in which country?”

Mercy nodded. The term country was slightly foreign to her. Sure, they had been taught history…but growing up, she had no real tangible connection with people outside of Zion…not even really with the coalitions.

“Let’s look at their facial characteristics to see if we can judge heritage,” Gibson said, adjusting the scope. A few moments later, he shook his head.
