MARIPOSA

We hurried across the fortress, making our way easily through any swarm that tried to surround us. A single pulse of power radiated out from Jandro and everyone was dead in the blink of an eye. Hades put the souls to rest, and Horus directed us closer to the Sha's inner chamber.

It all started to make sense to me as we got closer. The Sha was never seen out in public. Even his own soldiers within the compound knew him as General Tash, and only the General Council members that Andrea told us about, had a direct line to the mysterious general.

The Sha was afraid. I'd even go as far as to say that he was a fucking coward.

He knew a gun could kill him, knew his earthly body was just as vulnerable as any other body. The mysterious general persona, all the mind-controlled soldiers he threw into battle like they were nothing, it was all just to protect his slimy, cowardly hide.

The deeper we marched into the fortress, the hotter my anger burned. The Sha threw my father out into battle and stole my husbands, probably to use them as more armor to hide behind.

To my surprise, Freyja seemed pleased at my budding anger. I felt her within me and sort of outside of me, like a friend walking so closely behind me that I could sense her just over my shoulder.

Don't forget that I am also a goddess of death, she reminded me. Death is the greatest sacrifice for love. This anger you feel now is a result of your love, dear daughter. Your passion and devotion to the men who were taken from you. Let it fuel you and guide your hand.

Am I right, though? I asked in response. Or am I way off base about the Sha being so afraid?

I have never had the pleasure of meeting Set in any of his forms. Freyja’s mental voice bristled. In any case, it does not matter. You have found a source of strength. Now use it.

Before long, we approached a set of massive wooden doors carved intricately with hieroglyphics. At any other time I would have liked to study the symbols, run my fingers through the deep grooves of the wood. It’d be even better if Shadow was with me, book in hand as we tried to decipher the ancient language together. But the thing that took him from me likely resided on the other side of those doors. I’d blast those intricate carvings to splinters without a second thought if it got me any closer to my men.

Gunner, or Horus rather, looked back to face me, those blue eyes like slivers of sky. “The Sha is in there,” Horus confirmed with a jerk of Gunner’s head toward the doors.

Jandro turned to me next, focusing those endlessly black eyes on me while extending a palm in my direction. “Stay back. Let us go through first.”

I wasn’t sure if it was Jandro or Hades speaking but I nodded regardless, tightening my grip on my handgun.
