Chapter 14

Truth

Vomos – Clientless

Day 302 of the Lizard’s Year

The guard told me we’d been provided rooms for our use for up to a week, likely in case our services were required again, but I didn’t plan on using mine for any longer than was necessary.

The first thing I did was check on Roka. I brushed him off, even though a stable hand already had done a decent job. I spent a bit with the horse, sorting my saddle supplies for an inventory check.

My meticulous process chewed up a chunk of daylight while I organized my bags. When I finished, my breast pocket contained a long list of supplies I’d need to reach my next destination.

I returned to the castle to sort my main carrying bag and found a beautiful damsel sitting impatiently against my door, waiting for me to open it. She rose when I neared. The second I opened it, she strode into the room. Normally, I wouldn’t have had a problem with it because behind closed doors, things grew interesting. In this case, I worried.

Avril huffed a bang out of her eyes, folded her arms and said, “You can’t leave.”

“I can, and I will.” I turned to face the fiery woman. “Look, I know you see this place as your home, but what more can I add to this? My contract is done, and the client has made up his mind as to the results. Past that point, it's no longer my problem.”

She tossed her hands into the air. “But if the volcanoes erupt -”

The interior of the room held a bed and a tiny table with two chairs. I tossed my bag onto the table and slowly sat down. I calmly said, “I’ll be far away before that happens. It’s not my job to save the world, or the region, or this city.”

“Not far enough!” Avril stomped her foot as she tried to hold in her anger and frustration. “The Warbound hasn't let the true details spread. If a true chain reaction happens that sets off the biggest volcanoes, nothing will be safe. Never mind this continent, the entire world will feel it.”

I rummaged through my bag, emptying out the contents in an orderly fashion. I checked a past sheet to my current, noting the items I’d need.

“Avril, you’re wonderful, you really are. This is why I tend to stay detached. You’re thinking emotionally right now.” I tried to hold in my skepticism at her wild comments.

She flicked my ear. “Dick! Listen to me. The sky will turn gray, fields will shrivel, and the starvation will be the three hells being unleashed.”

I bit my lip to hold in my groan.

Sure, the volcanoes are big, and the power within each one is immense beyond words, but how bad could it truly be? How was it possible that such an incident hadn’t happened multiple times already?

I paused my inspection and pointed to the other chair. Avril planted her cute butt into the chair with a furrowed brow. She hated being bossed around, but I held the leverage here.
