She grimly looked out at the approaching planet. Vaksal had many secrets, she knew that only too well. The emerald green forests harboured strange, deadly creatures. A person could walk through the forests for days and see nothing, only to turn around and find their companion had vanished into thin air. No one saw the creatures, only tracks. No blood, only mouldering bones here and there, an old boot, a rusted laser. Rain fell most times in the forests, washing away all traces of victims.

The desert was miles of shifting sand and burning sun. It was either blowing with stinging sand or as still as death.

Death. Reya suppressed a shudder and fought the memories that threatened to rear their ugly heads. Her hand reached for the laser strapped to her thigh, the movement beneath the cloak catching the attention of the man seated beside her.

He cast her a curious glance. The mysterious woman beside him had travelled in silence since she’d boarded the travel ship five days ago. Attempts at conversation had been met with a silence that did not encourage any overtures of friendliness.

He was unable to see what she looked like, for she was dressed from head to foot in flowing dark robes with a close-fitted hood. Black netting covered her face and was tucked securely inside the hood that covered her hair. Boots peeked out from beneath the hem of the robes. The only thing that betrayed her sex were the long slim fingers. Fingerless gloves covered her hands and disappeared up the long sleeves of the robe. Like many others, she travelled incognito.

She sat still in an icy calmness that totally unnerved him. He’d be glad to get this trip over with as quickly as possible.

Reya thought the same. It had taken two weeks to get here, travelling in disguise just in case Maverk was stubborn enough to try and track her. So now she was here alone, right in the heart of a territory where she obviously had deadly enemies. Only a madwoman would walk right into it.

Ironic, when she thought about it.

Not for the first time, she wondered where Maverk was, and went over in her mind the steps she’d taken to ensure that he wouldn’t find her so easily.

After leaving the ship, she’d visited the settlement with explicit instructions to delay any help to him in regards to transport. He was not to suspect anything and no one had seen her, should he ask. Which he would. And above all, no harm was to come to him. The threat of death had been in her eyes when giving this last instruction, and the message was clearly understood by everyone and agreed upon hastily. Word would spread rapidly.

By now he should be on his way home. After all, having his departure delayed and her running out on him would have piqued his temper. After everything that had been said and done between them, there was no way he could possibly care enough about her to actually chase her into the depths of the Outlaw Sector.
