Chapter Ten

“What the fuck have these people done down here?” Ken Anderson asked himself in barely a whisper. He had to be careful that he wasn’t heard.

The tunnel he had headed down was now splitting again. These people were nuts.

Taking a moment, he had to decide which way to go. He decided to continue on a logical path of staying to the right as he had with the previous tunnel. If he had to backtrack, his moves would be consistent and he’d be able to get back to the beginning without any problems.

At this point, his body was so tired and cold that he felt numb. The temperature of the tunnel along with hunger and thirst was wearing him down. He needed to find something soon to eat and drink otherwise he wasn’t going to last. As for the cold, the down jacket he was wearing over his business suit was doing little to protect him.

Determination was what was pushing him further. He wasn’t going to let a bunch of country bumpkins take him down. There was too much at stake.

Moving down the tunnel, he began to notice doors periodically set into both sides of the tunnel. They all had deadbolts on them and after trying the first few, he found them locked. He moved on. Probably storage of some kind.

The further he went on, he noticed warm spots here and there. Being a geologist, he realized there had to be some geothermic activity under the mountain he was currently in. He needed to find a spot where the warmth stayed long enough for him to regain some of the feeling in his extremities.

Pushing forward, he walked on for a while longer before he found a warm spot next to one of the odd doors in the walls. He bent down and put his hand at the bottom of the door, curious to see what emanated from the small opening. A moist heat definitely could be felt seeping under the offending wooden piece, which drove his desire to gain entrance.

Stealing his nerves, he tried the door. He just had to hope that there wasn’t a citizen of Hope on the other side, especially one Gideon Davis.

Anderson not only needed warmth, food, and drink, but he also needed to find some weapons to protect himself with and then figure out how he was going to take down Gideon and his people.

He would start with the warmth first.
