Memory, Narrative and the Great War by Taylor David;

âThe cause is worthyâ you often said.
You said, âWeâre out to win,â
As we looked to the great new day ahead
That ushered Freedom in.
Somewhat paradoxically, the heroic abstractions that are not found in MacGillâs autobiographical war writings are now called upon to give purpose to a conflict that had run into a fourth year and had brought an ever-increasing toll of dead and wounded. There was a clear element of propaganda in this but also a sense in which MacGill found it necessary to call upon these heroic abstractions to maintain his belief that the war â and by extension his contribution to it â was itself just.
