Chapter 10: Inferno
âSo what have you been up to?â
Piper glanced sidelong at Estella, who sat, legs curled up and beside her, on the couch. They sat side by side, which Piper thought was strange, after what they'd done. Maybe this is just what friends with benefits did? Have simple conversations and sit together and maybe order a pizza after they'd fucked, just like friends would do after they'd gone to see movies together or played a soccer game.
It left a sour taste in Piper's mouth.
âUp to?â she asked, leaning further back on the couch and draping her arm along its back. Not near Estella, no. In the other direction. That would definitely seem romantic, and she didn't want to seem romantic, wanted to seem anything but romantic, even though everything inside of her ached for more. A gentle touch. A gentle caress. A kiss. But after they'd had sex, Estella had sat up, had not moved to kiss Piper againâso she had not pressed the issue.
âYou know...what have you been doing with your life? I know about your good fortune,â said Estella, her smile deepening as she held up a hand, âbut, I mean...what have you been up to since we last...talked?â
Talked? Is that how Estella characterized it? Two friends who'd been close, but who had simply lost touch. That made it sound so easy.
What they'd been through...it was anything but easy.
Piper stared at Estella, andâif she hadn't been looking so closelyâshe might not have seen it. But when Estella straightened up, stretching a little, righting her dress over her breasts, Estella glanced down at herself, tucking a strand of curl behind her right ear...
And it passed over her face.
Pain.
There was pain there.
âAre you...all right?â Piper asked uncertainly. When Estella glanced at her in surprise, Piper furrowed her brow. She said nothing else. The question stood.
Estella watched her, then shook her head, smiling again, but this time it was a careful smile.
A guarded smile.
A smile you give to a stranger.
âOf course, why not? It was good. You were good.â She reached out, and she patted Piper's bare thigh affectionately before she stood up and off of the couch. She fished her panties, crumpled, from the floor, and shook them out a little, toeing her high heeled shoes over to her. Somewhere in the middle of everything, she'd kicked them off. Piper did not remember her doing so. âWhat have things been like for you with the ladies?â asked Estella, and there was a little chuckle on the end of her question, like they were two close friends who discussed their love lives over coffee every Friday.
It was absurd.
And it hurt.
Piper shook her head, felt her jaw clenching. She couldn't think of an answer that was as light as Estella's question...so she simply said nothing at all.
God, how her heart ached as she watched Estella bend gracefully at the waist, stepping into her panties and pulling them up, over her stockings, over the straps of her garter belt. Her skirts pooled
