Not only did the club teach me to how to dislocate my joints, clasp my toes, walk like a crab and do the splits, it also taught me modesty. Or at least a certain belief in modesty. I began getting changed with my legs tangled in my towel, and, in consideration of my supposed femininity, I started wearing a bikini top. It didn’t fit properly, and one day I lost it when I jumped off the boat. I found myself seized by an incredible, dogged urge to retrieve it. I dived down as deep as I could to try and fish out the two white triangles and the narrow multi-coloured ribbons that tied them on. I held my breath until my lungs were about to burst. But I couldn’t find it. Lucile joked: “It’s fallen all the way down to the Princess of the Palace of the Sea. You should be happy. It’s an honour.” I didn’t smile. I felt horribly naked, and that triggered a shame whose burning wasn’t entirely disagreeable. Lucile teased me endlessly, wondering aloud which of the princess’s courtiers was going to wear my bikini top. Her teasing infuriated me. I acted as though I was fine with my skinny torso exposed to the breeze. But secretly I wondered why I was so desperate to retrieve my top when I denied with my entire soul the possibility that my breasts were ever going to develop.
