Eight

The sun was streaming into Jessica's bedroom. At first she put her pillow over her head and tried to fall back to sleep. Then she remembered what day it was and bounded out of bed. That morning she was going to Winston's house to work on their English project. She wanted to look her best in case the Hollywood director had already arrived.

As she bathed and dressed, Jessica thought back over the previous night's conversation with Winston. He had been so distracted, worrying about his buffet table, that all she'd had to say was "Can I come over tomorrow so we can get started on our project?" and he had agreed.

With her hair brushed and flying loose, and wearing a pair of jeans and her best sweater, Jessica felt ready to be discovered.

"My, don't you look terrific," Elizabeth said when Jessica pranced down the stairs and into the living room a few moments later.

"Thanks," Jessica said, settling herself into one of the beige armchairs across from the couch where Elizabeth was seated, leafing through a magazine. "Where is everyone, Liz?"

"Mom and Dad are out shopping, and Steve's washing his car."

Jessica looked out the window in the direction of the driveway. Steven was scrubbing his yellow Volkswagen so hard he looked as though he were trying to take the finish off it. "I wonder what kind of time he had last night."

"When we got home I saw him out on the patio with Betsy, reminiscing about Tricia." Elizabeth put her magazine down and became serious. "You know, Jess, I'm beginning to think you're right. Perhaps he is living too much in the past."

"And what about you?" Jessica asked. "Was being in Michael Sellers' arms like a trip back in time?"

Elizabeth could laugh about Michael now. "I think you know it didn't work out quite like that. I'm sure he said something to you."

Jessica crossed her legs and got comfortable. "Yeah. He stopped talking about himself long enough to tell me how rude you were."

Elizabeth snorted. "Me, rude? That's a good one."

"What did you do to the guy anyway?"

"I dumped him for Winston," Elizabeth told her with a sly grin.

Jessica's eyes grew large. "Oh, he really must have gone crazy when I did the same thing."

"He did. Enid and I were watching."

The girls giggled. "He deserved it, though," Jessica continued. "Boy, I've never met someone who was so impressed with himself."

Elizabeth sobered. "Nothing like Todd."

"Better luck next time," Jessica said lightly. "Only next time better not come quite so quickly."

"Funny, Enid said almost the same thing."

"Then for once I agree with her." Jessica stuck out her hand and gave Elizabeth's a little shake. "Elizabeth Wakefield, welcome to the land of the living."

"Thanks. I wish we could say the same thing to Steve," Elizabeth said.

"Hey, are you using the car today?" Jessica asked.

"No, I'm playing tennis with John Pfeifer, but he's going to pick me up," Elizabeth said.

"John Pfeifer? Love blooms on the volleyball court," Jessica teased.

"You know we're friends from The Oracle. There's nothing going on between us, except that we both like tennis.
