Gunnar balled his fists at his sides, pacing the tiny room. There was only just enough space in here for the bed and a rather old, shabby-looking couch that had seen better days. He’d be sleeping on it as soon as Mahlia got back.

There’d been some mix-up. The guy who’d let him in had rushed off somewhere afterwards but Gunnar had only been able to find one unlocked room in the place. Now there was no one around to ask for another.

He stopped at the window to look for her through the falling snow for what must have been the hundredth time. He’d locked the door downstairs against the snow and wind, so he’d have to let her in when she returned, but she’d been gone for three hours. The message he’d sent her about the room-sharing situation was still unread. Maybe he should go and check she was OK.

No.

She’d made it more than clear she didn’t need him there. These gatherings went on all night sometimes, especially in weather like this, and he was still kicking himself for reacting that way to the girl and her phone... No wonder Mahlia was annoyed. He’d tried to get her to leave! He’d probably reminded her of her awful ex.

Gunnar sank to the bed, pressed his palms over his eyes and yawned. It turned into a growl. God knew that idiot Javid was controlling enough; the last thing Mahlia needed was for him to start acting so... What was it she’d called him? Domineering. It was just that the thought of a photo like that getting out...of them in a situation like that... She didn’t know the storm it would cause for her, being linked to him. He was flirting with danger enough, being seen with her anywhere that wasn’t work-related, and now this.

A buzz came from his phone. He grabbed for it, expecting it to be her. It was Demus. Quickly, he answered. ‘It’s the middle of the night...are you all right, bud?’

‘Ma finally passed out in her bed. I just got back to my place. I figured you’d still be at that party.’

Gunnar walked to the window again, telling him he was alone for the moment. ‘I’m so sorry you had to deal with all that by yourself. Was your carer OK to stay with you while you rescued Ma? Did she help you run the bath for her?’

He watched for any sign of Mahlia through the howling wind and snow, biting the inside of his cheek as Demus filled him in on the latest. Ma had got herself so drunk that she’d locked herself out of her house. Failing to reach him, she had called Demus. Demus and whichever one of his carers had been there with him at the time had then had to undertake the hellish mission to go out in the snow with the spare key and locate her in the backyard, where she probably would have frozen to death if she hadn’t been so loaded on vodka.
