Chapter Seventeen

“Gotcha, you tricky little bastard.”

Prue shrank into the corner. If it were possible to die of embarrassment, the release would have been a blessing.

Her humiliation couldn’t have ended with the assumed disclosure of her indiscretion. No, the two men had come barging into her last, tiny corner of peace so Mr. Farley could paw through her private possessions. That he’d found the root of everyone’s troubles among them, heaped guilt upon her shame.

“My carelessness brought that criminal here. Either of you might have been killed.” Her hand tightened on Brutus’s collar. Though he’d obeyed her firm command to “heel,” he hadn’t ceased voicing his displeasure at the stranger’s presence.

She’d have given most anything to run away, at least as far as her workstation, but Delaney loomed in the doorway emanating territorial posturing equal to his dog’s, and blocking the only exit. She cast about for a distraction and arrived at the SD chip Mr. Farley had flung aside. It contained the new manuscript. Between her hangover and dressing for the shopping adventure yesterday morning, she’d forgotten to give it to Sam. Just as well, considering the woman had most likely pretended to be her friend in order to assist her brother.

Mr. Farley interrupted his inspection of the device to eye both the growling dog and his glowering master, then turned to her. “Not your fault. And don’t worry about these two. They can take care of themselves.”

The two-legged subject’s growl was barely distinguishable from the four-legged’s. “We finally agree on something. Dr. Marsh has this tendency to blame herself for everything.”

“I will thank you to refrain from discussing me as though I were not present.” Prue nearly snorted at the irony. “What I should like to know is how the perpetrator concluded my spinning wheel would provide a viable vehicle.”

Mr. Farley shrugged dismissively. “If this thing was sitting somewhere that made her think you use it a lot and might take it with you, she’d have picked it over of the usual suspects we’d go over with a fine-tooth comb, say, a bag or suitcase. Bet I’ll find another after Thorne shows me how to block this one’s signal.”

“‘She?’ You’re certain this Lilith is the one who…?” Prue flinched from the visual images, and a different sensory impression brought bile to her throat. “That awful smell. If I hadn’t tried so hard to forget, I would have formed the connection when I met her. Last night need never have happened.” She’d paid a high price for her denial, and jealousy, much as she’d prefer to avoid remembering that too. It truly was all her fault.

As if he’d read her thoughts, Delaney said, “You’re doing it again.”

She chose to address Mr. Farley. “May I see the transponder?”

“Go ahead. Damn thing’s too small for fingerprints anyway.”

Brutus’s hackles rose along with the volume of his growl when Mr. Farley moved toward her.

She plucked the tiny device from his gingerly extended hand and examined it closely. “Extremely advanced. The availability and expense of
