victorian bridesmaid cake

At a Victorian bridal shower, tradition called for the bride to bake a white cake for her friends. Into each slice of cake she would carefully embed silver charms, and then she would mark their placement with tiny buttercream rosebuds. The bridesmaids would find their fortunes revealed once they had eaten down to the charms.

In this version of the Victorian favorite, the cake and frosting are made from soap. To keep the project simple, I have used ribbons in place of charms, although real silver objects might be appropriate as well. Fortunes are revealed only after the soap cake is sliced into bars. For the buttercream rosebuds, I used premanufactured soap flowers, available from some of the retailers listed in Resources. However, you can come up with alternative means of marking the location of each charm.
