Since their argument, Sophie had insisted that he no longer accompany her to and from The DeModie. Jonas had given in and was rewarded with forgiveness. But not just that. For some reason, she made an effort to spend time with him on the weekends despite her late nights. He wasn’t entirely comfortable with the arrangement, knowing how much her feet hurt and how tired she was at the end of the night. Yet, she was positively bubbling with life. By now, Jonas attributed this less to her zest for life than to the cocktails Luca gave her to keep her going through the ordeal. A theory he didn’t dare share with Sophie after the last blow-up. Instead, they both pretended that there was nothing unusual about her nights at The DeModie.

“So, what do your parents want for Christmas?” asked Sophie, the excitement lighting up her eyes, as if she hadn’t spent the entire night dancing. Or possibly, because of it.

“That’s a very good question,” Jonas replied. “My mother is pretty much happy with everything, my father with nothing.”

Sophie laughed, bright as a bell. “That’s not very helpful. Is there not even the slightest clue?”

Probably the only thing that would make them truly happy would be his presence. “Hmm, my mother likes decorative stuff. Lights, candles, soaps. My father likes books, preferably about history. Just hard to find something he doesn’t already have.” Besides, he had little desire to go through the departments where war pictures stared back at him from every other cover.

“Okay, then let’s just go through the pedestrian zone and see what they have there. Maybe something will catch your eye,” Sophie suggested, hooking her arm under his to gently guide him in the right direction.

As they walked down the street, Jonas noticed the many coloured lights in the windows. Although it was daytime, they promised warm, loving homes. Surely, his mother had also hung up her advent stars and lit up the garden with fairy lights. Longing tightened his throat, and he hastily averted his eyes.

“By the way, Dad says you’re welcome to come over for Christmas lunch if you’re not going home,” Sophie suddenly said, as if she had read his thoughts.

Jonas eyed her in her thick coat and white earmuffs, her blonde hair peeking out from underneath. “Wouldn’t that be strange?”

“Stranger than you and I living together? I’d love it if you were there and I didn’t have to sit there alone with my dad,” Sophie confided to him, winking. “Besides, you owe me.”

Jonas raised an eyebrow. “I do?”

“Yes,” Sophie replied, stretching the word so long it almost sounded as if it was sung. “You’re to blame for the morning assault and fuelling his worry. Now you have to show him how much I’ve improved.”

The infectious sparkle in her eyes told him she wasn’t serious. Jonas frowned sceptically before he, too, had to grin. “Very well, if you need my support that much.”

She stuck her tongue out at him. “Think of it as a Christmas bonus.
