Chapter 25

Despite walking back into the camp naked, nobody challenged her. Meleena dressed in time to see the Elf stir.

Hair sticking out in all directions, bloodshot eyes, and a face plastered with a goofy expression, Wiz looked awful.

Eyeing him with concern, Meleena looked him over. “Are you sure you’re ready for this?”

He swayed on the spot, squinting in the sunlight and slurred his words. “I’m always ready.” With a grin he saluted her and almost fell over.

“Just great.”

Over by the Dwarf, Leeth rolled his eyes giving a sideways look at Baldar, who shook his head in disgust and wiped his axe blade with a cloth.

A timepiece appeared in Wiz’s hand. “We’ve got three moments for me to get there and complete the sequence.”

“Well then, you’d better hurry.” Leeth tugged Wiz’s arm toward Slab.

“Just get your sword ready,” Baldar said, grumbling to himself.

Queelan walked up, his sword drawn and ready for action. “Is it time?”

“Right about now,” Meleena said through gritted teeth. She wanted to yell at him, hit him, do something. Deep in her subconscious, alarm bells went off. This is wrong. As much as she wanted to ignore it, her primal instinct warned her to back off. All the steam drained out of her anger. Maybe he likes men, too. Leeth? No way.

She now saw Queelan in a new light, more like a brother than a lover. This was unfamiliar territory considering she usually got what she wanted with men. Wiggle her butt, show a bit of breast, and they drooled over her like puppy dogs. Queelan, however, seemed immune to her charms. “Speaking of dogs…”

“Dogs?” Queelan looked down to her right. “Oh.”

Meleena had not realize she had spoken aloud until Queelan reacted. She followed his eyes down to Dawg sitting by her side, his nose pointed toward Slab. This wasn’t the usual mangy hound. The dog was special and seemed to have intelligence far beyond his mixed breed.

A thunderous crash from the direction of Slab pierced the silence and pulled her from her thoughts. Leeth ran into the clearing dragging Wiz behind him. The tracker had a panicked look on his face while Wiz cackled and howled with laughter.

“Run!” Leeth never stopped. He kept running past.

An army of vicious black bugs chased after them. “Oh, gods,” Meleena backed away.

“This is not the place to take a stand,” Queelan clutched her hand and took off at a run. “Come on!”

She and everyone else followed him as he ran to the pond. “What are we going to do?”

He stopped at the edge of the water and Meleena almost ran into him.

“Think… think… What do I remember about…”

Meleena didn’t question what Queelan was talking about and instead turned to see the bugs advancing in a steady slow march, agitated and ready to eat.

“Grab a reed and into the water, now!”

“Are you kidding?” Leeth looked at him with surprise.

“Something I heard once. They can’t see or smell us under the water.”

Meleena glanced from the bugs to Queelan, then to the pond. She spotted reeds at the water’s edge next to a mat of lily fronds.
