âYouâre going to stay here?â
Seated on the bed in the general barracks room that had been assigned to him, Simon gazed up at Leah. âYes,â he answered. Heâd been surprised to have been accepted by someone. Heâd assumed he would have gotten his armor at best, then been forced out into the city on his own. He would have gone without question.
Derekâs willingness to make a spot on his team for him had been surprising. Of course, it looked as though spots were regularly made on the teams.
âWhat about me?â she asked.
A few of the other Templar listened in to the conversation. A tri-dee at the other end of the room had collected a crowd. There were few new broadcasts from London proper, but the media people seemed determined to fill the channel with old footage and new conjectures.
Simon shifted his helmet in his hands. Heâd been working hard for hours to clean the surface. Dirt and grit that clung to the armor made operation of the stealth mode harder. More than anything at the moment, he wanted to finish working on his armor and get some sleep. He was surprised by how tired he felt.
âWhat do you want to do?â Simon asked.
âI want to find my father.â
âWeâre going out on patrol tomorrow.â Simon was amazed at how quickly his thinking had become plural. âIf youâll give me the address, Iâll discuss it with Derek. Perhaps weâll be able to get by there.â
Leah crossed her arms over her chest. âI feel like I should be doing something.â
Simon put his helmet aside. âYou are doing something. Youâre surviving.â
âItâs not enough. I should be out there.â
âIf you were out there, on your own, youâd be dead in minutes.â Simon nodded in the direction of the wounded man a few beds down. âEven armored up, weâre taking our chances out there.â
âThen why go?â
âBecause we were trained for this.â
Leah glared at him reproachfully. âYou were trained to fight demons.â Her tone dared him to make her a believer.
âYes.â
She shook her head. âThat isnât something I can believe so easily.â
âYouâve seen them over the last few days. You know the demons are real.â
Letting out a quiet breath, Leah said, âYes, but believing that you were trained to fight these creatures is even harder to accept than believing in demons.â
âNow,â Simon said gently.
After a moment, she nodded.
âWe can hurt them,â Simon said. âWe can kill them. Thatâs something the London police and the British military havenât been able to do.â
âThe⦠the demons still outnumber you.â
Simon noticed that she still had trouble acknowledging what they were up against even though sheâd seen the demons up close on more than one occasion. For most people, one introduction was all that was required.
âUnless there are a lot more of you than Iâve seen,â Leah added.
âThere are more demons,â Simon replied. âThatâs why we have to move cautiously. The demons have weaknesses. Weâve got to discover them.â
âBut lying here in wait, hiding,â she said it like it was something obscene, âis only allowing them to terraform more of London.
