Chapter 11
“Get in my mouth.” Pip opened his beak.
George did not budge.
“I’m afraid it’s the only way,” Tad told the grasshopper. “And if Pip does decide to swallow you whole, I’ll tell the Lady and I’m sure she can arrange to extract you…” He gave Pip a narrow-eyed look. “By whatever means necessary.”
“I cross my heart, I will not eat you, George,” Pip trumpeted.
“Fortuitous.”
“I cross my heart, I will not eat you, Fortuitous. You might be tasty but your armor is…” Pip shook his head violently. “Bleh! I could not digest it. Plus, when the fairy dust wears off it would make me explode.”
Tad was ready with a witty retort, but George hopped onto Pip’s beak and climbed down into his mouth. Clever ripostes had to wait as they all magicked themselves back to Edgeview Manor with a dandy of a plan.
The moment Tad’s boots touched down at the edge of Lord Hornpew’s field his ears met with the unmistakable sounds of mischief. Crowds still mulled at one end, murmuring whatever it was crowds found to murmur about on the eve of an unprecedented event. Lord Hornpew and his underling stood aside. It appeared they were arguing over something. Poor Meg sat away from the throngs with her back to them and her head bowed.
Tad wished that he might transport her away from her troubles, but a giant girl might be a bit much, even for the pigeons. This plus the sun cast only a smattering of rays over the horizon. He needed to get George into the tournament immediately. Pip swooped down to deposit his charge in the middle of the field.
Something poked Tad’s arm. He looked down to see a boy with a mop of dirty hair and big, blue eyes staring up at him.
“Have you seen my brother?” The boy thrust a piece of parchment at him.
Tad pasted on his best social smile. “I apologize, young sir, but I am not from around here. You might inquire among the crowd.” He turned back to the field.
A little finger poked at his arm again. Tad stifled a grumble. “Look child, I am very busy and have no time for games.” He spared a glance at the boy.
The little nuisance had his parchment stretched out and was pushing it toward Tad’s face. “Just a minute of your time, sir. Are you certain you have not seen him?”
Tad pushed the parchment away. “Let me have a look, then.” The same depiction he had seen along the edge of the woods met his eyes, minus the pinecone. In its place was a rough sketch of what might have been an attempt at a pinecone with two eyes and something resembling lips on what might have been a face. “I am certain I have never seen this pinecone,” he said.
“Thank you, sir.” The boy bobbed away to plague some other unsuspecting soul.
Pip flapped out of the field, leaving George and his armor alone to face the giants.
Tad sneaked to the edge of the wood and crouched behind a bush.
