"Open up, Hollander, I know you're in there!"

Erik wraps the radio in a towel and stuffs it beneath the bed. "Hang on, Jonas, I'm coming." He strips off his shirt, then pulls back the deadbolt. "Sorry, I was just getting—"

Jonas bursts into the room. "I've been searching this boat for an hour. Where the hell've you been?"

"Calm down. I've been coordinating things between the Coelacanth 's chopper pilot and the hospital in Manila."

"Bullshit. I looked for you in the control room three times."

"Then you must have just missed me. I had to go below decks to the storage area."

"To avoid me?"

"Now why would I be avoiding you?"

"Don't give me that. You were out there on deck when that whale carcass flipped. You saw that Megalodon bite as clear as day."

"Meg bite? Easy Tiger, what I saw looked like an Orca bite, nothing nearly as large as a Megalodon imprint."

"You're lying. Where did you really get that white Megalodon tooth?"

"I told you, from an old college buddy."

"What's his name?"

"His name? Krawitz. Artie Krawitz. What difference does it make?"

Jonas gets up in his face. "Don't screw with me, Erik. I want to know what's going on."

"What's going on?" Erik pushes him aside, feigning anger. "I'll tell you what's going on. Jason Massett's dead, Lexy may lose her leg, my crew's losing it emotionally, Andrew's ready to quit, and the Daredevils have locked themselves in their rec room, getting drunk on tequila. And now here you are, barging into my room, ranting like some maniac about a Megalodon bite, of all things."

"I may be old, by I'm not senile. When it comes to these monsters, I know what I know."

"Nobody said you were senile, but everyone's on edge. Look, Jonas, I know all you think I care about is ratings, but that's not true. Remember, I'm the one who recruited most of these Daredevils, I consider them family. Everyone's upset about what's happened over the last few days, especially me. So please, take some advice. Go find your daughter. Spend some quality time with her. It's during times like these that we really need our loved ones."

Jonas feels his blood pressure normalize. "Okay. Maybe I overreacted. But there's been way too much blood shed on this voyage, and the whole idea of following a route that will take us close to the Mariana Trench is making me more than a little jumpy."

"I understand. Believe me, producing a television show is no picnic either, especially one as dangerous as Daredevils. Wait, I have something for you." Erik searches a suitcase, then shoves a prescription bottle into Jonas's hand. "Valium. In our business, we consider it an essential daily vitamin."
