From groups to norms

It is clear from the discussion of cultural group selection above that sometimes even the suggestion of an organization is enough to get people to cooperate. This observation leads us to the topic of those other kinds of “institutions,” the ones that are not formally organized but that still help shape the ways humans cooperate by giving us common frameworks in which to do so. Although these still fit some definitions of “institution,” most scholars refer to them instead as “norms” or “conventions.” Because norms and conventions are crucial to our understanding of the phenomenon of human cooperation, we have devoted two chapters to them. The next chapter focuses on the ways in which common knowledge helps people to coordinate their actions, even with strangers.
