Claire’s chest hurt. Maybe it was because of her heart; it pounded so hard she could barely hear anything else. The car lurched her back and forth. She glanced at Levi. Stared at him. Stared at him hard. Who are you?

His hand was still laid on hers, even though he no longer looked at her.

What is happening? She had no voice, or she might have asked him. Only she wasn’t sure she wanted to know. She should have run at her first chance. She should have backed up the car and left . . . but the thought had been too hard. Leaving him alone had been unthinkable.

This is unthinkable. Her mother was going to kill her. Payton was going to kill her. Unless these men get to it first. She was sick. She closed her eyes, but her breath was labored. How could this happen? Twice? First the hold up in the alley . . . now this? Did danger follow Levi, or what?

She paused. Her mind went back. That voice. She’d never noticed before, but the man in the alley had sounded black. Could it be the same man?

“Turn left.” Levi broke the silence.

The car jerked down another road. A familiar road. At first she couldn’t place it, but the moment the car stopped, she knew.

Where Levi kissed me. She was more than confused. She was bewildered. She withdrew her hand from Levi’s . . . abruptly, tucking it away from his reach.

He glanced at her, startled. His eyes seared into hers. “I’m sorry.” It was so quiet she hardly heard.

She didn’t have time to respond.

The black man opened her door and pulled her out. “Easy now, baby doll.” With one arm, he held her tight against his chest. He reeked of cigarette smoke. The odor was stifling. “We’re going to do a little hike, I think.” He lifted the gun and waved it, as if reminding Levi where they stood. “Alright, dawg.”

Levi’s eyes were enraged.

The black man eased her forward. “Lead da way.”
