“We have time for a short discussion on the case before we head out to the hike,” I said. “Thoughts?”

“We did find out that Blaze reported his hat was either lost or stolen,” said Forrest.

“The desk clerk did not specify who the gentleman was who reported his cowboy hat stolen,” said Atticus. “We cannot presume it was Blaze.”

“You’re right,” said Moonbeam. “But he appeared not to know anything about it being at the scene of the crime.”

“I don’t think I believe him,” said Frank. “He seems shifty with his bad boy swagger. I bet he knows where his hat was and reported it gone to set himself up to look innocent.”

“Anything is possible at this point,” said Atticus.

“I think we should add him to our suspect list,” said Zell.

“Pretty loose evidence, if you ask me,” said Sebastian.

“It’s the most we have so far.” I flipped the white board over and made a box in the center. I labeled it Owen, victim. I made a second box to the right and labeled it Blaze, possible suspect.

“Who else goes on the suspect list?”

“The spa lady with the lips,” said Zell, puckering up her own lips.

“Krystle Lambert,” said Atticus. “Her responses have certainly been abnormal.”

“I think we should add the yearbook bunch, Adrienne, Sasha, and Derrick. Not much to go on, but worth checking in to,” I said.

Everyone agreed, and I added the names. It felt good to have a few people on the suspect list, so I drew a big smiley face.

“They’re suspects,” said Valeria. “Shouldn’t you draw a sad face or a mean one?”

I laughed. “I guess so. I was just glad to have some potential suspects.” I erased the happy smile and drew a big frown. “So, what’s next?”

“We need to get a copy of the coroner’s report. That might have some critical information,” said Atticus. “It’s clear that the resort is not telling us the truth. After the hike let’s make a plan to infiltrate the resort office and look for that report.”

“Good use of the word infiltrate,” snickered Zell. “Cuz you don’t want to outright say we gotta break into the office.”

Atticus looked a bit flustered but didn’t reply.

“Let’s make some lunch here, then head out for the hike,” I suggested. “We can scope out some of the attendees and then make an infiltration plan. Meeting adjourned!”
