The Bamberg manuscript ( Ba)

The next stage in the history of the motet may be illustrated by this source, which dates from the late thirteenth century but contains a much earlier repertoire. It is a remarkably uniform document, with ioo motets, a conductus and seven textless pieces. The regular layout of two columns on each page, one for each upper voice, with the tenor across the bottom on a single stave, is interrupted only twice in the motets. Three works on ff. 31v–34 (Nos. 52–4) are written in three columns, the reason being that the tenor in these cases is a French song complete with text. No. 92 (f. 57v) ingeniously combines two tenors, which are written on two staves at the bottom of the page; this is the only four-part piece in the collection. Another kind of combination is shown in No. 81 (f. 52v), in which the song ‘Robin m’aime, Robin m’a’ from Li Gieus de Robin et de Marion appears with the tenor ‘Portare’ :
