Changing News Consumption
Internet access and usage have grown steadily in Italy in recent years. According to the National Statistics Office (Istat 2014a), more than six out of ten households had access to broadband Internet in 2014, double the number of households that were connected to the Internet a decade ago. More than one in three Italians aged six and over (36.9 percent) used the Internet daily, while those using the Internet occasionally were over half of the respondents (57.3 percent). However, Italy still trails far behind continental and Northern European countries, where Internet penetration often reaches 90 percent of the population, and also performs unfavorably compared with many of the Eastern and Southern European countries (Eurostat 2014; see also Sartori 2011; Matteucci 2013). Internet usage in Italy is still characterized by strong generational and, to a lesser extent, educational and gender gaps (Istat 2014a). In fact, a large minority of Italians, almost one in three, were still in 2014 complete strangers to the online world (Eurostat 2014).
As online access and general usage grow, however, so too does the number of people relying on the Internet specifically for news and political commentary. In 2013, three in ten Italians used the Internet to get newsâin 2012 they were one in four (see table 4.2). The number of those who go online to read news is thus growing (only one out of ten Italians reported using the Internet as a source of news in 2005). However, Italy was at the bottom (with Poland) in the 2012 ranking of European countries by number of readers of online newspapers and magazines (Istat 2014b).
