GROWTH, INEQUALITY, AND POVERTY REDUCTION

Trickle-down and the distribution of consumption

[Editors: This section and the one that follows were to cover the two “crucial issues … in the fight against poverty” (see the opening of the chapter) that Tony wished to address in chapter 6. They are taken up by François Bourguignon and Nicholas Stern in their afterwords to the book.]

TACKLING POVERTY AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Complementary or competitive?

CONCLUSIONS

1 Editors: Tony wanted to include Georgia in this chapter rather than in chapter 9. (Georgia is not in the high-income group; see box A in chapter 1.) However, we have not modified the structure of his draft, and we have left his discussion of Georgia in that later chapter. Taking Georgia into account, the range in longitude begins at 40°east in the disputed region of Abkhazia on the Black Sea. Georgia straddles Europe and Asia, as reflected in its membership in different international organisations: Georgia is a member of the Council of Europe and is a country supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, but it is also a “regional member” of the Asian Development Bank.
