Table 4.1. Categories of Potential Museum Impacts

•Content of Indicator (Column I) is a finer-grain filter that is also useful to track aspects that cross over several impact categories, like “collections” and “learning.” The sixty content topics are listed in table C.2 in Appendix C.

•Step or Kind of Indicator (Location of indicator along the Theory of Action) (Column G) helps you filter by what step you are looking for. In chapter 5, when you develop a list of potential purposes and desired impacts, you can filter by “Step 1 Intentional Purposes” and “Step 7 Perceived Benefits.” In chapter 6, when you select KPIs to measure those selected impacts, you can filter by “Step 6 KPIs,” while also checking Steps 3–5 (“Resources,” “Activities,” “Output counts and evaluation studies”) for any data fields you might want for new KPIs.
