CHAPTER 14

I decided to get Abby into the picture. She and Connie could easily hide in plain sight. They could go take a walk around the park and no one would cast a second glance at them. I could send off Connie with Abby while I drew the men away. I called Abby as I walked towards Connie.

“I’m sure third time’s the charm. Found her?” she asked.

“Yes, I’ve found her but she’s hiding up a tree. I’m worried she might not listen to me and make a fuss. I’ll need Chloe on the phone to convince her.”

“Right. Shall I hand her the phone?”

“Wait. Can you meet me near the carousel?”

“Sure.”

“Good. Hand the phone to Chloe and start walking. I’ll explain things to her.”

“On my way. Handing the phone to Chloe.”

“You found Connie?” Chloe asked excitedly.

“Yes. But there are some men around. That’s why I’ve asked Abby to come over. I’ll need her to get Connie out of here safely.”

“Oh. And me… what should I do?”

“When I talk to Connie, I’ll need you to be on the phone. I don’t want her getting scared and screaming. She could do that, right?”

“Oh, no. I should have thought of that. You’re right, she could make a big fuss. I always tell her not to trust strangers.”

“That’s what I thought. I’m going to ask Doyle to take you to the car and bring it around to 65th Street. I’ll meet you guys there with Connie. Hand the phone to Doyle.”

“Doyle,” he said as he got on the phone.

“I’ve located the kid. But there’s a slight change of plan. Take Chloe to the car and drive around to West 65th Street. Wait near the intersection. I’ll call you once I have the kid with me.”

“Copy that. We’ll get moving now.”

“Thanks, pal. Hand back the phone to Chloe. I need her on the phone so the kid doesn’t get spooked when I approach her.”

“Sure thing,” he replied and handed the phone to Chloe.

“Chloe, remain on the call. I’ll ask you to talk to Connie in a minute.”

“Yes. Sure.”

I got to the tree and stood with my back to it. I was facing the carousel and purposely didn’t look up at Connie.

“Hey Connie. I’m Chloe’s friend. She sent me to look for you,” I said in a voice loud enough for her to hear, but looking straight ahead in front of me, as if I was talking to myself.

I heard a slight rustle in the leaves above me but didn’t get a reply. I couldn’t be sure if I had any eyes on me. I couldn’t take the risk of revealing Connie’s location by looking up at her while talking.

“Connie, I know you’re up there. But I won’t look up at you until you’re ready to trust me. Chloe told me about the riddle you sent to her email. You said you’ll be riding 57 horses when the show begins, didn’t you? That’s why Chloe told me to be here at eleven. And here I am.”

I finally got a response after a few seconds.
