Chapter 8 - Punching Down

My mood soured as soon as the first screams went up. Police sirens were going off somewhere nearby, and the first of the injured were being hauled into the tent.

"Preacher, we need a hand here!"

I didn't recognize either of the men dragging their friend inside. They could have been fighters, but they didn't have that look about them. Regardless, they hadn't fared much better than the one they had between them.

"Benny get them some food," I ordered before making my way over, Mama in tow. "What's going on?"

"A couple packs of those dog men punched through the fence over by the woods. They got it closed up, but no way to know how many got through."

"Sit him over here," Pastor Paul ordered just as Benny came up. "You three eat."

"We really don't got time," the man started before being cut off.

"Just do it," Paul said firmly. "It'll heal your wounds."

Cowed, the two men did as they were ordered as Benny helped their friend. The results were immediate as all three perked up. Open cuts closed and bruises faded. Even the matted blood seemed to be reabsorbed before their eyes.

"These are awesome!"

"How'd you make these?"

The statements went unheard, however, as the tent flaps burst open revealing a half dozen monsters standing about knee high. I've never been overly familiar with breeds of dogs, but these were some kind of half man, half terrier creature. I guessed they were Scotties based on the kilts and claymores. They also had that crazy Braveheart face paint.

Gnolleshi Highlander | Level 1

This variety of gnoll descends not from the hyena like its more savage cousin, but from a breed of canine similar to your realm’s Scottish Terrier. Do not let their small stature fool you. The Gnollesi are alert, quick moving, and fiercely territorial. Oh, and you decided to erect your shanty town right in the middle of their claimed territory.

The yippy language of the creatures set my nerves on fire as they formed up looking for their quarry. It made sense that they would follow the men here. I wasn't about to let them hurt my customers though. Pulling the carving knife from my belt, I paused trying to figure out just how I was going to manage this one.

"Mama no!" Benny called out.

At some point Mama Luna had grabbed the broom from my truck and was now marching straight toward the six canine warriors. My earlier hesitation left me out of position to help as the nearest highlander was only a few feet away from her. I winced as she brought her broom up at the laughing creature.

What happened next was one of the most shocking things I had experienced to that point. Bristles whistling, the broom came down with a thunderous thwack. At first I assumed the wooden handle had snapped, but then I saw the monster's head tilt at a horrific angle. That single blow had ended the creature's life.

"How the hell did she do that?" I muttered, but the Framework must have picked it up as a question.
