Chapter Twenty-Three

The music around us continued to roll long into the night. I watched, surprised by my own peace in the midst of so much chaos. Somewhere along the way the tables were pushed aside to make a large open dance floor. The bards kicked the music up a notch, and people began to stomp and dance and prance about the floor.

For the most part, dwarves and humans stuck to themselves, but every now and then, a human would ask a dwarf to dance. The sight of all six foot five of Vex trying to dance with perhaps the shortest dwarven woman I’d seen so far made the whole village roar with laughter. Especially when she dipped him mid-song, and his hair brushed the floor.

It was all in good fun, and I couldn’t help but settle back, Bridgy tucked in my arms.

“You don’t want to go dance, do you?” I asked softly, running a hand along her back. She shook her head.

“Not right now. Ask me when your two left feet won’t step on everyone around you.”

“I can dance!”

She snorted and flicked my ear, arm resting around my neck. “And I can carry that big o’l mace of yours.”

I chuckled and let an arm drape over her stomach. She immediately took the hand and moved it off. I frowned and opened my mouth to speak but she cut me off.

“Devon, there’s um, something I need to tell you.” She glanced over her shoulder at me, and I raised an eyebrow. “How drunk are you?”

“That’s not telling me something.”

She swatted my hand and continued. “I um….” I could see the tops of her freckled ears turning red even in the firelight. “I’m sorry I’ve been so bipolar lately.” She mumbled. I shrugged, rocking her head gently. “It’s not normal for me. I don’t like it.”

“It did seem out of character,” I agreed, not really understanding. She sighed, shaking her head.

“It’s more than a little out of character. I’m not–I don’t– I don’t care if you have dwarves around or make choices for us. I know you’ll do right and–”

“Bridge, what are you trying to say? I thought we settled all this.”

“I figured out why I’ve been so weird lately.” I waited for her to elaborate. Instead, she slowly returned my hand to her stomach and glanced down.

“Holly shit,” I whispered. “Are you saying…”

She nodded quickly. “Yeah.”

“How? I mean, how long? What? When?” I stumbled through the words, and she flicked my ear again.

“If you don’t know how, we’re in bigger trouble than I thought.” She teased with a nervous giggle.

I stopped dead, then laughed. It was like all the air had been sucked out of the room in an instant, then returned with a hit of Nitrous oxide. I laughed and wrapped both arms around her, careful of her pregnant belly this time, and laughed.

“You’re not mad?” She asked worriedly. I shook my head, and she let out a relieved breath.

“Why would I be mad?” I finally managed to get out, and she shrugged.
